The Hook System

Everything, in one place: engines, flavors, the targeting lever, the bridge, techniques, channels.

Read it top-down, or jump to the build order if you just want to make one. The engines are the pulls. The flavors are the shapes each pull can take (all taught in Lesson 07 · deck). Self-relevance aims them at one person. The bridge makes them believable. The techniques are how you build and sharpen them. The channels are where the words live.

1 · The four engines (the pulls)

Gap: they stop Missing info you make them want. Lesson 01 · card
Flavors: curiosity gap · utility gap · surprising-origin gap · emotional-contradiction gap · process gap.
Arousal: it matters Emotional charge that fires the body. Lesson 02 · card
Flavors (the ladder): awe · anger/indignation · anxiety/fear · excitement/hope · recognition ("this is so me") · validation ("finally someone said it").
Open loop: they stay Tension held unresolved over time. Lesson 03 · card
Flavors: withheld noun · numbered promise · "but wait" · unit cliffhanger · loop stacking.
The Maybe: they can't look away An honest, uncertain outcome. Lesson 04 · card
Flavors: honest uncertainty · the bet · the skeptic's turn ("I'm not sure, but...").

2 · The targeting lever

Self-relevance: "make it about them" Not a pull by itself. It aims the four engines at a specific person so they feel caught. Narrowing the audience increases the pull. Lesson 06 · card

3 · The bridge (why they believe you)

Credibility: trust in the source Not a pull. It makes the reader sense that a real answer sits behind your gap, so surprise reads as curiosity instead of confusion. Lesson 07 · deck
Flavors: the receipt (a number) · the tenure (time served) · the scar (an admitted mistake) · the witness (someone else's words).
Pair it with the Maybe: credibility is trust in the source, the Maybe is honesty about the outcome. Credibility alone slides into overclaim.

4 · The techniques (the tools)

How you build & sharpen an engine Get specific · name the sensation (not the concept) · build the bridge · match hook to payoff · the specific-insecurity call-out · the private-behavior mirror.

5 · The channels (where the words live)

Title vs verbal hook Same engines, two delivery channels. Title = on-screen text (must work muted); verbal = spoken (one breath). Divide the engines; the verbal must add, not echo. Lesson 05 · card

6 · The 7 field strategies (a menu, not a model)

What creators are actually seen doing From videodatabase.org's hook-strategy taxonomy, surface patterns tagged across thousands of videos. Every one maps onto machinery above:
H.01 Curiosity & Open Loops → gap + open loop · H.02 Relatability & Contrast → self-relevance + recognition · H.03 Transformation & Payoff → process gap + hope · H.04 Credibility → the bridge · H.05 Secrets & Shortcuts → utility gap dressed as access · H.06 Opinions & Polarization → anger + validation · H.07 Identity & Specificity → self-relevance.
Its counts are popularity, not performance. And it can't see the Maybe, that engine has no phrase tell. Diagnose with the engines. Unstick with the seven. Lesson 07 · deck

7 · The build order (how you actually make one)

Eight steps, in this order 1. Write the payoff in one sentence, before the hook; it's the ceiling on what you may promise · 2. Name one person, not a group · 3. Find the true feeling (the moment, not the label) · 4. Pick the gap flavor your payoff can pay · 5. Set it at half-knowing (≈ 0.50) · 6. Build the bridge if the gap is surprising · 7. Choose the debt (loop) and the doubt (maybe) · 8. Split the channels, title survives muted, verbal adds.

Then run the seven-question pre-flight, and use the flop diagnostic when something misses. Lesson 08
And the boundary The engines optimise attention over time. Some content doesn't want time, it wants a reaction, a one-line artifact where the payoff is the hook. There, validation plus self-relevance is the whole machine and a gap gets in the way. Also skip the system for pure utility, and for anything heavy (grief, bad news) where engineering a maybe is just manipulation.

The whole job of a hook, in one sentence: aim a real engine at a specific person, in a channel they can actually receive it, and pay off what you promised.
