Why an uncertain payoff grips harder than a promised one.
The gap makes them stop. Arousal makes it matter. The open
loop makes them stay. But the deepest pull of all is this: they keep going
when they don't know whether the payoff will even be worth it.
That not-knowing, the maybe, is dopamine itself.
This is the counterintuitive one, and it's the most powerful. It's also
the one that fits your honest voice best, because here certainty is the
enemy.
The science: dopamine is the "maybe" chemical
Most people think dopamine is the reward chemical, the hit of pleasure
when you get the good thing. Wrong. A neuroscientist named Wolfram Schultz
spent decades measuring it, and found dopamine fires on the
surprise, not the reward.1 Give a
monkey a treat it fully expected? Almost no dopamine. Give it one it didn't
see coming? A big spike.
Then the finding that matters here. When the reward was uncertain, a
coin-flip, maybe yes maybe no, the dopamine did more than spike. It
ramped up and stayed high through the entire wait. Dopamine
peaks not at the reward, and not at zero chance, but at the exact middle:
maximum uncertainty.

Certain outcomes, either way, are flat. The pull lives in the middle.
Think of a wrapped gift you're not sure you'll like versus
one you already know is socks. The not-knowing is the thrill. The moment you're
certain, good or bad, the pull drops.
Gap vs Maybe (the deep distinction)
Two different unknownsA gap = you know the answer exists, you just don't
have it yet. ("What's the cause of my burnout?")
A maybe = you don't know which way it goes, or whether
it pays off at all. ("Will this actually fix it, or not?")
A gap makes you want the missing piece. A maybe keeps you activated because
the outcome itself is still in doubt.
The paradox: certainty kills the pull
Here's the move almost every creator gets backwards. They think a
bigger, surer promise pulls harder. It's the opposite.
Why "this WILL change your life" pulls LESS
Two reasons. One: the brain disbelieves an overclaim, so
trust drops. Two: even if believed, a certain
payoff makes less dopamine than an uncertain one. A humble "maybe this
matters, I genuinely don't know yet" can out-pull a confident guru promise.
If you already write honestly, this is a superpower. A line
like "I'm not sure this will work, but..." isn't a weakness to overcome.
It's the highest-pull framing there is. Honesty and the maybe are the same
move.
The dark side (use this responsibly)
Uncertain reward is also the engine of slot machines and doomscrolling,
the "maybe the next pull wins" that hijacks people. So the line matters:
The ethical lineHonest maybe: real uncertainty you actually have ("I didn't
know if this would work"). Rigged tease: fake suspense over
a payoff you know is mundane ("you won't BELIEVE #3"). Only promise the
uncertainty that's actually real. The rigged version wins once and loses
the follower forever.

Real skepticism = real uncertainty. Both outcomes feel possible.
Why the maybe fails (three ways)
Fail 1: fake maybe
Manufactured suspense over an obviously mundane payoff. The brain calls the
bluff and trust dies. ("You won't believe what happened next," and we will.)
Fail 2: too certain (overclaim)
A guaranteed huge result. Disbelieved, and lower dopamine anyway. The
confident-guru trap.
Fail 3: uncertainty with no stakes
"Maybe X, maybe Y" but the reader doesn't care which. A maybe only grips
when the outcome matters. The maybe needs arousal underneath it.
Sweet spot: a real question, with real stakes, whose outcome the
reader honestly can't predict.

From memory.
Do this before the capstone
Take a piece of your own that states an outcome up front,
certain and settled. Add a real maybe: reframe the opening so
the outcome feels genuinely in doubt, in your own honest voice ("I'm not sure this will work..."). Write both versions below, the certain one and
the reframed one. Two things have to hold: the uncertainty must be
real (not a fake tease), and the stakes underneath it must be real
too.
